The choir I love so much decided to go for round 2 of entering our local and then kingdom Arts and Science competition. This year we were to sing "Sicut Cervus" a song written by Giovanni Pierluigi de la Palestrina. This song was published in 1604 but was most likely written sometime between 1525 and 1590. Once again we all threw ourselves in to learning our parts and I took on the task of throwing myself in to research! What is cool is that, in my 7th grade class, we had just started learning about the Renaissance! I got to play for my students the "Sicut Cervus" which they thought was very beautiful and very complicated. I agreed it WAS in fact a complicated piece. This paper like the first, very much expanded my musical knowledge and that of the history of the Renaissance. You will notice that because Palestrina was obviously a fan of Victoria, especially in their use of an ethereal polyphonic style, that some of the source material from my last paper was also used in this current paper. That was kind of a neat thing honestly, to see how one influenced the other.
Note***** tracking down the primary source material for this was one of the most hilarious and frustrating research battles of my life. I have been asked to write the saga of the month long mystery of the "Sicut Cervus." I am almost done with that piece and will add it here when finished! Enjoy!
Update: Saga has be written click on the link above, under the title, if you are interested in reading.
